Happy Doesn’t Mind if He Doesn’t Make the Scene . . .

Reading News

Wishes do come true in that I have the great fortune to be living in interesting times. Those of us who observe and opine for a living have at our disposal as satisfying a smorgasbord of material to feast upon as one could imagine. What’s even better, though, is the way it’s being served up to us, like a hanging curve ball with the bases loaded.

The gnashing of teeth, the moral condescension and the tsk-tsking surrounding the latest political peccadillo, the Spitzer Affair in New York, was intriguing. Some saw no real harm in his actions and suggested it was a private matter that was being made more in the media than it was in fact; others called for his head and other body parts on a platter. I offer no opinion either way, let he who is without sin and all.

Rather, my comment today is about the media. Outrage, outrageous headlines and stones have been replaced by barely concealed breasts in newsprint. After taking Spitzer to task for his unseemly, tasteless and morally bankrupt behavior, one of the NYC local newspapers published an almost “not safe for work” photo of the lady in red. Do as I say, not as I do comes to mind, but that’s just too obvious and easy, like the fish in the barrel.

You want an even easier target, though? The market’s tanking, a Wall Street investment bank failed and is being bought out at pennies on the dollar, and gas is up to $3.35 in my whereabouts. I watched and listened to that moron tell us that there is no reason to worry . . . yes, the economy is in a little bit of a pickle, but things are going to be fine. All of you who agree with Mr. Happy, please raise your hands. Hands, please. Anyone?

Reminds me of that song, Dire Straits I think . . . .
“Harry (or Happy, in this instance) doesn’t mind if he doesn’t make the scene, he’s got a day time job and he’s doing all right.”

Interesting times, all right.
