What Is It We’ve Become, Part 2.
One of the many pleasures one can have in this world is helping bring folks together whose interests are synergistic. In an earlier column I reported an incident involving a teacher who had duct taped a student to his chair in order to control his behavior. The column was entitled “What Is It We’ve Become?” and you will find it here . She was suspended from her teaching position over the matter, something I consider to be outrageous. I thought the idea was brilliant!
Today’s news brings us a story from Florida concerning a second grader who was arrested and removed from school for punching his teacher in the face. Actually, he didn’t limit his punching to the teacher: he threw chairs, and hit a couple of fellow students, also. Crayola crayons were at the heart of the conflict, and as you know, crayon disputes can get very ugly. So, not surprisingly, tensions escalated, punches were thrown, things got weird and the police were called.
The little miscreant’s grandmother told reporters that he does get upset over things, and he just loves to punch. Oh, those crazy kids, all punching and everything. Just so darn cute. What’s a grandmother to do, anyway?
The teacher told the police the boy threw several punches at her, an accusation the boy vigorously refuted, saying he only hit her twice. The teacher had bruises on her face, according to a police statement.
What does Granny have to say about it? Well, she thinks if the teacher can’t take a few punches to the face, she ought to find other work. But, it gets better, and this is where the other story fits nicely.
Gram says the boy should be put in someone else’s class, and let that other teacher restrain him.
The circle is now complete. Gram, let me introduce you to the teacher who duct taped a boy to his chair. Teacher, this is Gram, who thinks her little snowflake ought to be restrained.
Son, say hello to your new master – - duct tape. Brilliant!
